Termination of Parental Rights

A termination of parental rights is a court process where the relationship of parent and child is severed permanently.

 FAQ's

Can I voluntarily terminate my parental rights?

Generally, a Court will only voluntarily terminate parental rights if there is another individual to step into your financial shoes to provide support to the minor child.  In other words, parental rights are generally terminated in conjunction with an adoption. An exception to this rule is when there is Social Services involvement and there has been a removal of the minor child from a parent’s home.

Can my parental rights be terminated without my consent?

Yes, there are many situations where your parental rights can be terminated including abandonment, abuse, or neglect.  In any event, the Judge would need to determine that it is in the child’s best interests for parental rights to be terminated.
